Checklist - Removing Data from Digital Devices

Checklist – Removing Data from Digital Devices

ü     Identify types of donated devices that will require digital data removal (computers, cell phones, and PDAs).

ü      Create standard procedures for data removal that will be used by staff at the AT reutilization center. Use those procedures for training the staff (see below) and place a copy in a binder in the work area. For general background, see objects with “Data” prefixes in the Sanitization module of the PIOC database, and Internet resources under Links.

ü      Select and license the software tools that will be used in the data scrubbing process.

ü      Create an area suitable for working with digital devices. This should include appropriate flooring, lighting, power supply, air circulation and exhaust and worktables. The work area should conform to OSHA requirements.

ü      Items needed for worker safety should be acquired and made available.

ü      Write a safety policy specifying appropriate attire (clothing and shoes) and safety accessories in the work area.

ü      Write a policy specifying required safety training for staff members who will remove data from digital devices. This should include training in safety regulations (including OSHA requirements) and workplace safety practices and proper procedures in working with electronic devices. A basic First Aid course may be a requirement. Workers also should be educated about intellectual property law as it applies to software licensing.

ü      Create policies and procedures for tracking the removal of licensed software from digital devices and the reloading of operating systems.
