Sustainability - Build capacity

Sustainability

Strategy 3: Build Capacity

The third key strategy to ensure sustainability is to build capacity. Plan to expand the ability of the organization to serve the user community. That may be done by serving more users, or by expanding the services offered to existing users. Building capacity means that the organization serves more people and plays a bigger role in the community.

The objective of building capacity is not to over-extend the organization’s resources. Goals should be aggressive but achievable. See the effective capacity building points from the McKinsey & Company report for Venture Philanthropy Partners, Effective Capacity Building in Nonprofit Organizations, at the link specified below.

Many of the strategies essential to building capacity are integral to building a strong organization and are addressed in the functional modules on this web site.

The organization should adopt a continuous improvement process model and measure its success.
